At heart, I am a counselor. Even from my high school days, I contemplated being a counselor. In college I served as a resident assistant. Students in my dorm floor confided in me. I was able to give them the support they needed to work through their personal challenges, whether it was dealing with dyslexia, unexpected pregnancy, or grief. Whatever the students were dealing with I provided a safe supportive place for them to process their situation as well as appropriate resources.
After college, I walked with many friends through personal crisis in their marriages. More opportunities to counsel woman came to me when my husband and I became lay ministers in our local church in the late 1990’s. I engaged women as individuals and in small groups; encouraging, equipping and empowering them to a greater place of spiritual, mental, emotional and physical health.
Through planning and leading weekend retreats for women, I have been privileged to have a front row seat as individuals come to realizations about themselves and in turn make significant break throughs in their lives, family and marriage.
Even when working in the corporate environment, I thought systemically, and was therefore able to be the peacemaker between departments. Attuned to employee’s needs I interviewed Employee Assistance Program providers so that an effective mental health program was made available for employees and their families.
These positive experiences gave me the desire to become even more effective in my support to people in my community, so I pursued a masters in Marriage and Family Therapy.
